Reflections for Day 1

1) Jun Hui

1. Plenary Sessions:

1) Importance of water - Dirty and Clean
Problems with water have begun since long ago, but the fight to make dirty water into clean water is still ongoing, thus still opening a viable industry for us to work in the future.

2) Revolution of MIcroelectronics Technology
Microelectronics, with the 9 O’s, would shape the future of microelectronics in my opinion.
They are: Bio, Radio, Auto, Info, Nano, Water = Hydro = H2O, Audio, Video,
Energy = m x c2 = m x c (two)

3) Biomedical Engineering and Technology
Nanotechnology would help us improve our technology, as smaller particles, covering a larger surface area within the same volume would be much stronger, which are like Nano- Material coatings, bullet proof vests, fighter jets cover, also that nature has its own nano components such as shark’s teeth.

4) IT for Animation
- 2D animations are expensive and labour intensive
3D animations are cheaper than 2D animations
But 2D still runs around in television anime and such.
First 2D movie ever - Lion King (45 Million)
First 3D movie ever - Toy Story (30 Million)

5) Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels and why gravity is even more important than you think.
Geodesists measure the shape and size of the earth, it’s gravity field and its change over time. And now with space based techniques, they can measure this things in greater detail.
Important point: “Sea Level will not be the same everywhere.”

2. The plenary sessions that leaves the deepest impression on me is “Importance of water - Dirty and Clean”
This plenary session had a very good way of presenting its slides, and on top of that the topic, even though not well known, was still being able to be presented to us and keep us engaged as the speaker himself was very engaged.

2) Reuven

Reflection for Day 1 - Reuven
My key learning points from each session...

Importance of Water - Dirty and Clean
The are still a lot of places with water problems outside of Singapore which offers opportunities for entrepreneurs dealing with such problems.

Revolution of Microelectronics Technology
Electronics is a highly lucrative value-added industry which the Singapore government is trying to promote (Knowledge-Based Economy and Value-Added Industries).

Biomedical Engineering & Technology
Nanotechnology is a way of getting more out of less (in simpler terms), and is able to increase efficiency, speed and effectiveness out of existing products.

IT for Animation by Prof Seah Hock Soon
2D animation is actually harder to produce than 3D animation because of the labour intensiveness, which is quite ironic as 3D is seemingly better but is cheaper than 2D animation, which is kind of cheesy.

Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think
Sea levels may actually rise differently across different locations due to melting glaciers, and the further you are away from the glacier, the more the sea level increase, and this may equate to about 25% more increase in sea levels in areas far away from the glaciers such as Singapore where we are in.

Deepest impression...
The plenary session that leaves the deepest impression on me is “Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think”
What I like about it is that a relatively unknown area of science called geodesy could impact what we previously thought about how rising sea levels worked.

3)Jin Hao
Reflection for day 1 - Goh Jin Hao
1. Importance of water - Dirty and Clean
-Pollution is smelly, causes infectious diseases, chronic health risks and environmental degradation
-People do not have access to clean water, have inadequate sanitation, die frequently from waterborne diseases and most are at risk to bacteria in the water
-Problems like water pollution allows more entrepreneurship opportunities to occur

2. Revolution of Microelectronics Technology
-Integrated circuits are a form of entrepreneurship
-9 examples of why microelectronics technology is used widely
1 Bio
2 Radio
3 Auto
4 Info
5 Nano
6 Water=Hydro=H20
7 Audio
8 Video
9 Energy=mc2=mctwo
-A lot of functions and jobs depend on Microelectronics Technology

3. Innovative breakthroughs in Nano-science and Nano-technology
-Nano-technology helps to keep away body odor temporarily, helps in perfumes, helps to clean the water, kills bacteria, change the color of contact lens and hide braces
-Particles want lesser energy. The bigger the particle, the lesser the surface area and the lesser the energy gained

4. IT for animation
-Animation is made through optical illusions when consecutive static images are played
-The special effects are made trough the understanding of the laws of physics and calculus
-2D images are difficult to draw, more costly to make and troublesome

5. Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think
-Sea levels will not be the same everywhere
-A reason for sea levels to rise is called "self-attraction and loading" where melting glaciers play a part
-When the crust is depressed, the water will be attracted to the glacier due to the decrease in the height of the ground in the sea
-When the land is pushed down by the glacier due to its weight, the land in the sea towards the glacier would go down
-If the crust melts, it would decrease in weight, causing the land in the sea to go up and thus, causing the water to flow away from the glacier
-This would then cause the water level to rise towards our shores.
